Whenever I had the opportunity to choose between buying a manual car or an automatic, I’ve always gone for a Manual and not an Automatic car. So do most learner drivers in the U.K.
Here in Britain, the British like their manual gearbox with the stick, but that’s changing. The manual car gives greater dynamic speed controls, like fast acceleration. Here are some benefits of learning a Manual car compared to an Automatic.

- Cheaper driving lessons per hour – Typically 1 hour cost £28 – £30
- Passing your driving test in a manual, means you’re licensed to drive Automatic. (This is changing)
- It’s cheaper to buy a manual car
- Cheaper on car insurance about 10%
- Cheaper to maintain your car
- Cost-effective on fuel, but this is changing too
- Manual gearboxes last longer than automatics
- JOB PROSPECT – Most commercial vehicles drivers require a full license – Manual. (This is changing)
If you pass your category B driving test on or after 1 January 1997
You can drive vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM with up to 8 passenger seats (with a trailer up to 750kg).
You can also tow heavier trailers if the total MAM of the vehicle and trailer is not more than 3,500kg.
You can drive motor tricycles with a power output higher than 15kW if you are over 21 years old.
Physically disabled drivers with provisional category B entitlement will also have provisional entitlement to ride category A1 or A motor tricycles. Correct at time of publication 02-02-2020
